In the series Hearing From God

How God “Speaks”

We previously discussed that God communicates with us through:

  1. Bible
  2. Prayer
  3. Voice
  4. Pastors / teachers
  5. Prophetic words
  6. Tongues / Interpretations
  7. Dreams / Visions
  8. Peace
  9. Unusual circumstances / coincidences
  10. Fleece
  11. Opening / Closing doors
  12. Bringing things to your memory
  13. Inspired thoughts
  14. Prompting of the Holy Spirit
  15. Draw your Attention to something
  16. Nature / creation
  17. Worship / music
  18. Emotions
  19. Writing
  20. Angels

How God Responds to Prayer

God responds in 5 ways

  1. Yes
  2. No
  3. Wait
  4. Confirmation / Direction / Clarity
  5. Silence

Voices We Hear

Voices / thoughts / impressions that we get aren’t necessarily all from God

The voices can originate from

  • God
  • Your Mind
  • Voice of Your Flesh
  • Your Gut
  • Voice of The World
  • Voice of The enemy
  • Voice of Religion

Your Mind

Your Own Voice

  • Your own plan
  • Your opinion

Your Emotions

  • How you feel
  • Fear
  • Embarrassment
  • Unhappiness
  • What will people think?

Your Flesh

Lust of the Flesh

  • To want something because it feels good
  • Your physical desires and sinful tendencies

Lust of the Eyes

Desire for

  • Material goods
  • Status

Pride of Life

Desire for

  • Power
  • Significance
  • Respect

Your Gut

  • Bacteria
  • Viruses

They influence your desires

  • Cravings and addictions
  • Sweets
  • Alcoholism
  • Sexual desires
  • Obesity

Voice of the World

  • Cares of the world

The systems that promote non-Christian perspectives

  • Science
  • Media
  • Popular opinion

Ideologies

  • Republican / Democrat
  • Feminists
  • Environmentalism

I am a good person because I follow these values

  • Because I follow these values and deserving of happiness

Secular beliefs are usually based on:

  • Culture / society
  • Historical context
  • Your emotions

Example: South Park Museum of tolerance

Voice of the Enemy

  1. Strongholds
  2. Temptation
  3. Fear
  4. Isolation
  5. Attacks When You’re Vulnerable
  6. Condemnation
  7. Deception
  8. Distraction
  9. The Enemy Can Influence Your Thoughts
  10. He Uses Other People

The Voice of Religion

False Doctrine

The Popular Doctrine Isn't Always Right

Throughout the whole Bible there are many times when the majority of the people are following a wrong belief.

  • Baal worship
  • Pharisees

God would then have someone go to the people and tell them that they are wrong.

  • Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jesus

Example: God doesn’t speak anymore

  • The bible is closed
  • New Testament speaks often of The Holy Spirit communicating with you

Idol Worship

What if I had a statue of God?

@Exodus 20:4

"You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.

Praying to:

  • Mary
  • Saints

Who has heard of Warner Sallman?

Example: Warner Sallman

  • Best known artist of the Century —NY Times
  • 1940 “Head of Christ”
  • 500 million copies were sold

What if I had an altar with his painting on it?

God said not to make any idols or likeness of Him

  • That was one of the key differentiators between Jehovah and the other gods
  • Jesus is God

God’s Voice (Review)

You can’t just judge based on your personal experience or by what your church does.

How do we “test the spirit”?

Does it Agree With the Bible?

How do you know what God is going to say unless you know what He already said

How do you know how God is going to speak unless you know how he has already spoken

Get Counsel from Wise Christians

God Uses Other People to Confirm His Word

  • Pastors
  • Bible teachers
  • Fellow Christians
  • Prophets

Ask God for Confirmation

Confirmation can be through any of the ways God speaks

Does it align with a Previous Word from God?

Does it Align With Your Purpose?

Purpose vs. season

Things Effortlessly Fall Into Place

Don’t expect this to be the normal scenario.

Your Heart Burns

You feel a deep emotion or burning pull for something.

Does it Bring Peace?

Philippians 4:6-7

6Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Shalom

completeness, soundness, welfare, peace

 eirḗnē

Usage: peace, peace of mind; invocation of peace a common Jewish farewell, in the Hebraistic sense of the health (welfare) of an individual.

  • Strong’s Concordance

Natural / Worldly Peace

John 14:27

27“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful

The world defines  peace as to be without trouble.

  • To be free for a conflict
  • To have no stress
  • Being free of what caused you to be anxious or stressed

It is a temporary escape from an otherwise troubled existence.

Some historians describe peace as the lul in the battle when everyone stops to reload

Example: Calgon take me away

The world pursues peace by

  • Distraction
  • Recreation
  • Drugs
  • Shopping
  • Massage
  • Yoga
  • Meditation

We’re not talking about a natural peace

You Got What You Want

Example: international tasting job

We’re not talking about a peace that comes from getting what you want

You will have a peace if it is the decision the world would obviously suggest

Sometimes Used to Justify

Some people justify bad choices by saying… I am at peace about it.

Example: move in with your side chick

  • Wife was nagging and complaining
  • Now You can play video games all day and don’t have to work
  • Now you’re at peace

Example: God told me he was going to be my husband

  • He’s the fine pastor
  • 5 other women said that
  • His wife is not at peace with that word

Supernatural Peace

What is the peace of God  that surpasses understanding?

  • Not worried
  • Not anxious
  • Not stressing

2 Thessalonians 3:16

16 Now may the Lord of peace Himself continually grant you peace in every circumstance. The Lord be with you all!

Supernatural peace is a sign when when you have peace when you don’t get what your want

  • It is not the peace you get after everything works out the way you wanted
  • That’s natural peace

Example: stop looking for a job

  • Didn’t solve the problem

Supernatural peace is not based on your circumstances

  • Natural peace  - based on things outside of you
  • Supernatural peace - based on things inside of you

Fireproof Faith

  • 3 Hebrew boys

Sometimes God will deliver you from the fire; sometimes he will make you fireproof.

Supernatural peace is usually about you not getting what you want

  • The storm doesn’t go away
  • The solution doesn’t get presented
  • You don’t get what you want

When you get a word from God and you get a supernatural peace, that’s confirmation that it’s God

You Don’t Always Get Peace

Just because it’s God doesn’t mean you’ll always have peace

Those who didn’t feel peace about the Word God gave them:

  • Jonah
  • The Israelites to go into Canaan
  • Told Hezekiah he was going to die
  • Samuel told Saul he would be king
  • Nathan told David his child would die (Bathsheba)

Not at Peace

Acts 24:24-25

24But some days later Felix arrived with Drusilla, his wife who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. 25But as he was discussing righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix became frightened and said, “Go away for the present, and when I find time I will summon you.”

Does his lack of peace mean that God wasn’t at work?

Why was Felix afraid?

It was the conviction of the Holy Spirit

Conviction of the Holy Spirit

John 16:7-11

7“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8“And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; 9concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

  • The Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment

Why was it to their advantage that Jesus left?

  • The Holy Spirit can be in everybody at the same time
  • God or Jesus won’t stop you from doing wrong
  • Only the Holy Spirit will convict you.

God speaks through conviction

Example: hell sermon

  • Many will join church after a fire and brimstone sermon
  • “You might get hit by a car when you leave”

Conviction vs Condemnation

Is the conviction moving you towards following Jesus?

  • Is there an obvious solution?
  • Condemnation  just make you feel shameful

Example: backslider

  •  you need to go back to church

Not Guilty

When someone is found guilty of something in court… They are convicted of the crime

  • You were judged and found guilty

Story: witness protection

We were found guilty of our sins

  • But Jesus paid our time

How does God most often speak to you?

Voices We Hear

Voices / thoughts / impressions that we get aren’t necessarily all from God
The voices can originate from
  • God
  • Your Mind
  • The World
  • Your Flesh
  • Your Gut
  • The enemy
  • Your Emotions

Your Mind

Your Own Voice

  • Your own plan
  • Voice of past trauma
  • Limiting beliefs
  • View of God
  • Waiting to punish you
  • You need to perform for love

Voice of the World

The systems that promote non-Christian perspectives
  • Science
  • Media
  • Popular opinion
Non Christians often believe
  • If you come to believe there is not a God that is through reason
  • If you come to believe there is a God that is through faith
Everything that you doubt about Christianity is based on faith in something else.

Examples:
  • I can’t believe in a God who allows such evil and suffering
  • What you are saying is that because I can’t think of a good reason that God would allow evil and suffering there can’t be a good reason
  • Your doubt is based on faith in yourself
Secular beliefs are usually based on:
  • Culture / society
  • Historical context
  • Your emotions

Your Flesh

Lust of the Flesh

  • To want something because it feels good
  • Your physical desires
  • Your sinful tendencies

Lust of the Eyes

  • Coveting
  • Desire for status

Pride of Life

  • Power, Significance, respect
  • Something that leads to boasting

Your Gut

  • Bacteria
  • Viruses
  • Fungus
  • Candida
  • Yeast
They influence your fleshly desires
  • Cravings and addictions
  • Sweets
  • Alcoholism
  • Sexual desires
  • Obesity

Example:
  • Obesity in rats
  • Sex drive in crickets

The Enemy

How many of these are you experiencing during the lockdown?
  1. Stronghold
  2. Temptation
  3. Fear
  4. Isolation
  5. Attacks When You’re Vulnerable
  6. Condemnation
  7. Deception
  8. Distraction
  9. The Enemy Can Influence Your Thoughts
  10. He Uses Other People

Your Emotions

How you feel can interfere with you hearing from God
You can be influenced by:
  • Fear
  • Embarrassment
  • Unhappiness
Example: what will people think?

God’s Voice (Review)

You can’t just judge based on your personal experience or by what your church does.

Does it Agree With the Bible?

How do you know what God is going to say unless you know what He already said
How do you know how God is going to speak unless you know how he has already spoken
  • Look at the context
  • Who was the verse addressed to?
  • We can apply promises God made to Israel
  • We were adopted into God’s family
  • Jesus already fulfilled some of the promises
  • We can apply wisdom literature
  • We can’t apply statements from one person to another
  • Is it in Alignment With the Whole Bible?
  • Is it Universally True?
  • What Was the Point of the Verse?

Example: all Christians will be rich
  • Were the apostles rich?
  • Did Jesus promise riches?

Get Counsel from Wise Christians

There are 3 types of spiritual leaders in your life
  1. The evangelist wants you to connect with the message of Christ
  2. The teacher wants to teach you the word and show you what it says about your life
  3. The mentor is there to help you listen to your life
The first two are directed by their goal for you. The mentor is going to come in and ask questions first.

God Uses Other People to Confirm His Word

  • Pastors
  • Bible teachers
  • Fellow Christians
  • Prophets
Story: drunk guy in Vegas elevator

A Prophet May Confirm it

I Thessalonians 5:19-21
19 Do not quench the Spirit;
20 do not despise prophetic utterances.
21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good;

Gift vs Relationship

When it comes to hearing God from others you are generally operating through a gift.
When it comes to hearing God for yourself you are not usually not operating through a gift.
  • You hear him through a relationship.

Old Testament Prophets

Did the old testament prophets operate in the gift of prophecy?

“Spiritual gifts“ are gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit did not indwell people until Jesus brought Him here.

Prophetic Myths Debunked

Have you heard it said that:
1.     Prophecy Will Only Be Confirmation
2.     Prophecy Will Always Be Positive
3.     Prophecy Will Only be About You

@Isaiah 38:1-6
  • God told Isaiah to tell Hezekiah he was going to die so get his house in order
  • Hezekiah cried to God
  • It wasn’t a confirmation
  • It wasn’t positive
  • It wasn’t about Isaiah
These myths were developed to protect against the many false prophets that we have in our churches but they aren’t biblical.

Ask God for Confirmation

Confirmation can be through any of the ways God speaks
  • Bible
  • Other people
  • Coincidences
  • Doors opening / closing
  • Fleece
Story: Skip breakfast

Can you think of an example of when God gave you confirmation?

Does it align with a Previous Word from God?

Proverbs 16:9
9The mind of man plans his way,
But the LORD directs his steps

Example: God told me to teach
  • Join this other growth group

Does it Align With Your Purpose?

Life Purpose vs Season

We have a life purpose and we have seasons. Every season may not seem to guide you towards your purpose.
Story: my history
  • Tutoring job
  • Tutoring company
  • Consulting company
  • Teaching

Things Effortlessly Fall Into Place

Acts 18:1-3
1After these things he left Athens and went to Corinth. 2And he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, having recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome. He came to them, 3and because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and they were working, for by trade they were tent-makers.
  • Convenient coincidences
Story: computer teacher was college counselor

Heartburn

When Jesus met the Disciples  on the road after the resurrection

Luke 24:31-32
31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight. 32They said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?”

How do you know it’s from God?
  • When your heart burns
When you have a strong sensation caused by God’s presence

When The Word ignites something inside of you
  • A renewed enthusiasm
  • An irrational hope
  • A peace that surpasses understanding
You may feel an intense communion with God, that "inspires" you to become active.

It changed the disciples ... from mourning His death ... to proclaiming that He was alive!

The disciples went from doubting, fearful, questioning followers to becoming leaders
  • They bravely faced the risk of death
  • They preached boldly to crowds of thousands
A word from God changed me from a pew Christian who wouldn’t volunteer to help with anything

“TEACH”

Change me from not wanting to volunteer for anything because I didn’t have time…

Changed me from focusing solely on my own pleasure...

To spending 20+ hours a week working on this ministry

Someone said that the gift of teaching always comes with a hunger for the Word

A fire burning in your heart is yet another way to discern the voice of God

When it ignites a fire within your chest

When you have a supernatural motivation to do something of God

I pray that God inspires a burning in your heart

I pray that during this locked down that you get a burning desire to serve the Lord

We Want Help Making Big Decisions

We want to discern the voice of God when we need to make a decision. We want to discern the voice of God when we are about to take action on something that could have a major impact on our lives.

Strongholds

  • fortified structure
  • Patterns of beliefs
  • An argument that goes against God or the bible
  • Example: The bible was based on a culture that doesn’t apply today
  • not a sin but the argument you use to justify the sin
  • Allows you to ignore or downplay whichever parts of the Bible you deem as inappropriate

Discerning God’s Voice

What would you tell someone if they said God told them not to witness to someone?

How can we test to discern if something is from God or not?

Does it Agree With the Bible?

  • When God speaks it is confirmed by his word
  • If it contradicts the word it is not from God

2 Timothy 3:16-17
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;
17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

We’re not asking “does it agree with our religious practices of my church”

Know who God was talking to in a verse.

Did God promise that every infertile couple could have a son even if they’re over 80?
  • The promise was specific to Abraham and Sarai

Look at the Context

If you have faith God promise to:
  • Heal
  • Make you rich

3 John 1:2
2Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.
So is God promising health and wealth to all of us beloved Christians?
  • Who is “Beloved” referring to?
  • Where does it mention faith?

3 John 1:1-3
1The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.
2Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers. 3For I was very glad when brethren came and testified to your truth, that is, how you are walking in truth.
  • John is speaking to Gaius
  • Gaius is the “Beloved”
  • This is a greeting to the letter
John isn’t even promising Gaius prosperity and health

The Word will be in Alignment With the Whole Bible

Jesus says “the poor will always be with us”
Jesus clearly wasn’t promising that if you follow Him you’d become rich

Is it Universally True?

  • What if you’re in jail for life and you have faith in Jesus
  • Are you going to become rich?
  • Does your interpretation only work in America?

What Was the Point of the Verse?

Was it something they did because it was cultural and therefore no longer applies or was it something based on God‘s character or the nature of mankind?

Example: flat earth

Exodus 20:4
"You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.

The point of the verse was “don’t make any images/idols”.  God wasn’t teaching them geology or astrology.

God wouldn’t educate them just to make a point

Game:  Could That Be God?

We want to base our determination on the Bible not necessarily on cultural or church tradition.
You decide...does the bible support the claim?

Casting Lots

What if a Christian told you God told them to flip a coin to decide between two jobs?
  • Do you tell them that wasn’t God
Acts 1:23-26
23 So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also called Justus), and Matthias.
24 And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all men, show which one of these two You have chosen
25 to occupy this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.”
26 And they drew lots for them, and the lot fell fnto Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.
  • They prayed to God and ask him to control the outcome
Cleromancy
Cleromancy is a form of sortition, casting of lots, in which an outcome is determined by means that normally would be considered random, such as the rolling of dice, but are sometimes believed to reveal the will of God, or other supernatural entities.

Leviticus 16:8
8 “Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats, one lot for the LORD and the other lot for the scapegoat.
When Jonah was in the boat how did the sailors determine Jonah was causing the storm?
  • The cast lots
@Jonah 1:7
7 Each man said to his mate, “Come, let us cast lots so we may learn on whose account this calamity has struck us.” So they cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.

Proverbs 16:33
33 The lot is cast into the lap,
But its every decision is from the LORD.

David says that whatever the lot decides is from the Lord

Story: Teddy pick by random verse

Sculpture of an Angel

What if a famous artist said that God came to him in a dream and told him to create a large sculpture of an angel in front of the church for free?
  • It would be worth 100s of thousands of dollars
@Exodus 20:4
"You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.

Walk Around Naked

What if someone said: God told me I’m a prophet and I should walk around naked

Isaiah 20:2
2the LORD had already spoken through Isaiah son of Amoz, saying, “Go, remove the sackcloth from your waist and the sandals from your feet.”

And Isaiah did so, walking around naked and barefoot.

God Told Someone Not to Witness

Someone mentions that their roommate is not a Christian, when asked if they’ve told them about Jesus they reply “God told me not to”.

Do we tell them that Jesus said: “Make disciples of the whole world”?

Acts 16:6-7
 6They passed through the Phrygian and Galatian region, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia; 7and after they came to Mysia, they were trying to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them;

Common Misunderstandings About Prophecy

Have you heard it said that:
  1. Prophecy Will Only Be Confirmation
  2. Prophecy Will Always Be Positive
  3. Prophecy Will Only be About You
Isaiah 38:1
1In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and said, “This is what the LORD says: Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.”

Get Counsel from Wise Christians

Proverbs 11:14
14Where there is no guidance the people fall,
But in an abundance of counselors there is victory.

Proverbs 12:15
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But a wise man is he who listens to counsel.

Proverbs 19:20
Listen to counsel and accept discipline,
That you may be wise the rest of your days.

Not based on if you want to do it

Example:  I meet with a Pastor before each series

Selective Counseling

Sometimes we ask a lot of people until somebody says what we want to hear
  • Or they only ask people who they know will agree with their opinion

God Uses Other People to Confirm His Word

1 Corinthians 14: 3-4
3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation. 4 One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.
How many of you have heard something confirmed during a sermon?

Story: take the job at HP
  • General vs specific word of God
Might be:
  • Pastor
  • Bible study teacher or student
  • Prophet

Ask God for Confirmation

Judges 6: 36 - 38
36Then Gideon said to God, “If You are going to save Israel by my hand, as You have said, 37then behold, I will place a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that You are going to save Israel by my hand, as You have said.”
38And that is what happened. When Gideon arose the next morning, he squeezed the fleece and wrung out the dew—a bowlful of water.

Story: Skip breakfast

I always ask God for confirmation when
  1. Joining or leaving a church
  2. Choosing a mate
  3. Taking a job
Example: leaving a church

I wouldn’t leave a church because the pastor leaves unless I was already considering leaving and I got confirmation. If I was at that church happy go lucky with the pastor I’m not leaving to follow him.

Training Your Ear

Hebrews 5:14
14But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.
  • “Senses” is physical and natural
Aisthētērion - Senses
faculty of the mind for perceiving, understanding, judging

Listen

The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between.
-- Claude Debussy

Have you noticed that “listen” and “silent” have the exact same letters ?

Looking and noticing and paying attention matters

How to train
  • Set an time to be with God
  • Quiet time
  • Reading scripture
  • Worship
  • Pray
  • Fasting
  • Listen
The greatest gift in the end time will not be a speaking gift but a listening gift
