Uncommon calling
Ephesians 4:11-12
And He gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, some as pastors and teachers, 12for the equipping of the [e]saints for the work of ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ;
How many of you feel like you’re called to do one of these things?
Apostle
Prophet
evangelist
Pastor
Teacher
These are not all of the callings that exist in the church
Some of us have callings that the church doesn’t have labels for
Deacon
Youth group leader
Usher
Choir Director
Labels only define what we’ve seen in the past
many people aren’t passionate about what they’ve been called to do because they are waiting on a label to give them permission
Maybe God called you to do:
An uncommon thing.
A common thing in an uncommon way.
When you have an uncommon calling you are not following a playbook
You are creating a blueprint
You might get:
Misunderstood
Criticized
Two people can be called to the same thing, but called to do it in different ways
Maybe you feel called to preach the word, but You don’t feel called to preach behind a pulpit
Or maybe you feel like your job is your mission field
Example: team lead at IBM
at work, my whole team started debating on biblical topics and that’s why I created Bible studies
The programmers were studying the Bible so they could come back and debate the next day
I would come back with Bible verses to try to argue my point
That is how I started doing Bible study
Some people are called to do the ministry of the word in conversation
Me: I’m hearing my calling in this season is to help people identify their purpose
5 years of studying psychology and emotional health
Almost all of the training that exist is training for common callings
Seminaries train you for common callings
That’s why we’re “Unchained Disciples”

Finding Your Purpose
The two greatest days in your life are:
the day you were born
the day you figure out why you were born
– – Mark twain
Purpose is the fundamental reason something exists
It is the "why”
The Bible tells us that everything was created by God, the Designer, for a reason
If you want to find your purpose… You have to start with God
Your calling is the purpose that God created you for
It's the destination or the end goal of your assignment on earth
General Christian Callings
God created humans to be in relationship with Him
That relationship was severed in the Garden of Eden
The purpose of Jesus’ death was to restore our relationship with God
Not just so you could get to Heaven
All Christians are called to:
To Love God
Love your neighbor
Make disciples
Unique Calling
Additionally, you are called to use your unique gifts, talents, and abilities to serve others, and to glorify God.
Having a purpose gives you
a meaningful goal
a sense of fulfilment
clarity in priorities and decisions
Having a purpose makes suffering more bearable
In this series we will discuss
The general purposes that all Christians share
How to Discover your unique purpose
How to overcome the barriers preventing you from pursuing your purpose
Biblical Role Models Review
What Is a Biblical Role Model?
A biblical role model is a scriptural figure who can be used as a blueprint for believers to find their identity, mission, and divine calling.
