We worry about …

Current Issues

  • Why are they discriminating against Asians
  • Why did Shameless end like that

Big problems

  • Am I going to be able to live a normal life after this medical diagnosis?
  • How can I cope after losing my loved one?
  • Do I have enough money to retire?
  • Will I ever get married?
  • Does God really exist?


  • How am I going to deal with this person?
  • Why would they do that?


  • Is this outfit right for the Spring?
  • How can I lose this “Covid 19” before summer
  • Tupac or Biggie?

We’re Busy

We’re stressed.

We chase anxiety because boredom makes you notice pain

New things are accompanied by anxiety

The busyness distracts us

Philippians 4:6-9

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus

Finally brothers and sisters whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent and praiseworthy – think about such things

And the God of peace will be with you

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is an emotion that we all get when we are in stressful situations

Apprehensive uneasiness or nervousness usually over an impending or anticipated ill

A magazine study showed When people worry

  • 40% of the things never happen
  • 30% have already happened and can’t be changed
  • 22% they have no control over
  • 8% involve situation over which they have influence

a man turned to his pastor and told him that he was wrong and that worry actually works.

He said none of the things that he worried about actually happened.

Helpful Worry

When is it helpful to worry?

Helpful worry

  • Thinking ahead
  • Anticipating problems and trying to solve them
  • Planning

When is it unhelpful to worry?

Unhelpful worry

  • Focusing on things you can’t change
  • Things that never happen
  • Constant distraction
  • It leads to diminished trust in God and peace
  • You spend too much time living in the future
  • It produces inaction

Do What You Can Do Now

  1. Do what you can do now
  2. Give God what you can’t do
  3. Trust God to handle it

Severe Anxiety

  • When you have high anxiety over things that don’t cause a threat
  • Worry excessively and constantly about everything that’s going on in their lives
  • Difficulty controlling it
  • Restlessness
  • Fear
  • Inability to sleep at night
  • Can’t concentrate on tasks
  • Panic attacks

Anxiety Disorders

It is more common in women than men

5 Major Anxiety Disorders

  1. Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
  2. Generalized anxiety disorder
  3. Panic disorder
  4. Post traumatic stress disorder
    1. The result of a very traumatic event or series of events
    2. They may have panic attacks or phobias associated with people, places or sounds.  
  5. Social anxiety disorder
    1. When normal interactions cause excessive worry, fear or embarrassment.  

Dealing With Social Anxiety - Be Curious

Mindset: Show up to see not to be seen

Are you here to see or be seen?

  • Be genuinely curious
  • The energy goes in the other direction
  • You aren’t worried about what to say or who to talk to
  • When you are interested you become interesting
  • This looks like confidence

You Want to be in Control

Isaiah 26:3-4

3 “The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace,

Because he trusts in You.

4 “Trust in the LORD forever,

For in GOD the LORD, we have an everlasting Rock.

Peace is connected to trust

You’re a Planner

You are trying to predict an outcome that is uncertain

Your Pride

1 Peter 5:6-7

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,

7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.


“I” in the center of the word anxiety?

  • At the center of your anxiety is your pride

The reason you are so anxious is because you have you at the center

Carrying the Weight

“ I don’t know if I have what it takes“

It wasn’t the flat feet.  It was the weight.

  • but pride at feeling that it is all about you
  • It’s all dependent on your ability

Psalm 56:3

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you."

Fear causes us to look into the future and erase the presence of God.

Faith causes us to look into the future and assume the presence of God.

Anxiety and Depression

People Pleasing

2 Corinthians 9:7

Each one must do just as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.


  • Self worth is based on the opinions of others
  • Trying to control the emotions of others
  • Want to be liked by everybody

You should give as you choose and the other person is responsible for the rest.

We are responsible for our own

  • Wants
  • Limits

If you’re truly doing it out of love then it’s fine

  • If you’re doing it with resentfulness and bitterness then it’s a problem

Boundaries or not about asking the other person to do something

  • Even respect your boundaries
  • You only have control of yourself

Do not confuse boundaries with manipulation

  • Not demanding anything from the other person
  • Allow the natural consequences to fall on the person who is responsible for it


  • boss always asks you at the last minute to write his speech

Be Anxious For Nothing

Prayer is never our last line of defense. It is our first line of defense.

Prayer changes your brain

Neural plasticity means that our brain is constantly changing and rewiring itself

It has been found that 12 minutes of daily focus prayer over an eight week period. Can change the brain to such an extent that it can be measured on a brain scan

The practice of gratitude

Philippians 4:6

6Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

  • Thanksgiving

When you were in a calm state write down the things you are thankful for where they bring you joy

  • Experiences
  • People
  • Material things

Reflect on this list when you begin to worry

Write down the list at the end of each day for the things that happened that day

Change Your Focus

Philippians 4:9

And the God of peace will be with you

Your life is moving in the direction of your strongest thoughts

Negative Self Talk

Do you have negative self talk?

You can’t control what happens to you, but you can control how you frame it.

You can look at life from a negative perspective or you can say God you are good you are faithful and you are true.  

We don’t interpret God through our circumstances, but we interpret our circumstances through the goodness of God.  

Don’t Ask the Wrong Questions

Exodus 4:1-4

1Then Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to my voice? For they may say, ‘The LORD has not appeared to you.’ ”

2And the LORD asked him, “What is that in your hand?”

“A staff,” he replied.

3“Throw it on the ground,” said the LORD. So Moses threw it on the ground, and it became a snake,and he ran from it.

4“Stretch out your hand and grab it by the tail,” the LORD said to Moses, who reached out his hand and caught the snake, and it turned back into a staff in his hand. 5“This is so that they may believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has appeared to you.”

  • God responded with a question

Don’t Focus on What You Don’t Have

Moses was saying:  Give me something else

“What is that in your hand?”

God will always point you to what is at hand… What he already gave you

Moses was worrying about hypothetical questions

You need to focus on what God has already given you.

Don’t Focus on Other People

God has already given you a “that“ no matter what they do.

Don’t pray for God to violate someone else’s free will

  • Pray “God help me”
  • You can pray for someone

You Decide How to Respond

Deuteronomy 30:19

19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have placed before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants

 75% of all mental, physical and behavioral issues come from our thought life

  • cancer is 98% from the mind

They are the result of issues in our lives.

 We can’t control the things that happen, but we can control the reaction.  

You Choose Your Response


Your perception which impacts your reactions it’s based on what you have planted in your unconscious mind.  

  • The toxicity in your mind based on your experiences manifest into your conscious mind.  
  • We use existing memories to form current new perceptions and memories.  

Reticular Activation System

You Can Modify Your Genes

5% of our genes can be genetically engineered.

  • 95% of our genetics is perfect.  
  • We can change the 5% that has come down through the generations.
  • The other 5% were passed down from Adam.  
  • The things that have come down from other generations can be changed.

If you fill your mind with what God said it will help you choose the correct probability.  

Don’t Sleep Angry

Ephesians 4:26

Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger

What you are thinking influences how your body is functioning. If you go to bed whining and moaning it impacts you.

You have 300 million new cells when you wake up and what they look like is dependent on how you went to sleep last night.

The way you cope or handle things has a direct impact on the amount of anxiety you experience

  • If you change the way you cope you can change your level of anxiety

Scientific Study: University of Cambridge

  • Women living in poor areas are more likely to have anxiety than women who are not
  • Those who had good coping strategies had lower anxiety

People who faced extreme hardship like wars and natural disasters didn’t have anxiety if they had good coping skills

  • Those who didn’t went on a downward spiral of developmental disorders

People with anxiety think a lot about what they are doing wrong.

Does anyone have a friend  who is always pointing out everything you do wrong?

People with anxiety do this to themselves all day long.

You can start supporting yourself by forgiving yourself for the mistakes you have made.

Forgive yourself if

  • You had a panic attack
  • You want to talk to someone but couldn’t muster up the strength
