What Are Dreams?

Dreams are stories and images that our minds create while we sleep.

Dreams occur in/from the nonconscious mind.

  • Your conscious mind relaxes when you sleep
  • Your nonconscious mind never really sleeps

Dreaming is a way of us understand what’s going on in our thought life

Your dreams aren’t random… They come from your own personal experiences or thoughts

  • Fact:we Only see familiar faces

Continuity hypothesis

We dream about things that we experience when we are awake

Your dreams are influenced by your environment

  • Temperature

Example: dog barking nearby

  •  Your dog could then appear in your dreams

Dreams vs Visions

A vision occurs when a person is awake and alert;

a dream occurs when a person is asleep.

  • Peter was awake for his vision of the unclean food (Acts 10:9-23).
  • John was awake for his vision recorded in Revelation (Revelation 1:9-11).
  •  Pharaoh’s cup-bearer and baker were asleep when they had dreams that Joseph interpreted (Genesis 40:5-19).
  • Joseph, Mary’s fiancé, was asleep when an angel spoke to him in a dream (Matthew 1:20-24).

Sleep

Who has heard of REM sleep?

Sleep phases

  1. Non-rem 1
  • Transition into sleep
  1. NR2 (45-55%)
  • Less aware of your surroundings
  • You rarely dream in this stage
  • Unconscious thinking type of dream
  1. NR3 Deep Sleep (15-25%)
  2. REM - rapid eye movement (20-25%)

The powerful dreams are in REM sleep

Dream type is a way to tell which phase you're in

These phases last for about 90 minutes and we repeat the cycle 2 to 4 times per night

NR3

In this stage you experience

  • Sleepwalking
  • Sleep talking
  • Bedwetting
  • Night terrors

REM Sleep

  • Rapid Eye Movement
  • Dreams

The brain in the stage looks as if you are awake

difficult to wake people up

Logic is Turned Off in REM

The prefrontal cortex is not active

  • Logic
  • Reason
  • Self-awareness

Left brain is off

This is why

  • we aren’t self-aware
  • Dreams don’t make sense
  • We associate things that we wouldn’t normally

Memory consolidation happens when we sleep

  • Storing the important memories
  • Deleting the unimportant ones

Learning Takes Place

In REM sleep memories are replayed in real time

When you test or learn during the day… People spend more time in REM sleep

Example: REM sleep will improve your ability to learn

  • Ride a bike
  • Play the piano

Sleep paralysis

If our brains are acting things out while we sleep… Why don’t we physically act them out?

While we dream our body becomes paralyzed so that we don’t harm ourselves

  • REM atonia

Sleep paralysis occurs when you partially awaken during REM sleep

You are awake enough to be aware of your surroundings, but asleep enough to still be dreaming

Some people Experience dream like hallucinations

  • Alien abduction
  • Ghosts
  • Vampires

During this people have three main reported sensations

  1. Feeling or seeing a dark malevolent presence in the room
  2. seeing an evil being sitting on top of your chest preventing you from breathing
  3. A form of levitation
  1. Being raised by a ghost
  2. Bing lift it into a spaceship

This experience usually only last a few minutes, but it may seem like it lasted the whole night

It usually affects people under the age of 25

1/3 of the population may experience sleep paralysis during their lives

Sleep paralysis is when the dreaming brain takes control of the conscious brain

SLeepwalking

When something goes wrong with this… You can sleepwalk

Most sleepwalking occurs in phase 3

There is a disorder where you do act out your dreams Because this paralysis has been turned off

  • Hold conversations
  • Fight
  • Yell
  • Jump out of bed

During NR3 sleepwalking some people have

  • Driven cars
  • Cook food
  • Climbed cranes
  • Commit murder

Sleepwalking is genetic and can be triggered by trivial things

  • Genetic

Those who suffer from RBD usually eventually contract dementia or Parkinson’s

You should normally wake a sleepwalker up

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is characterized by falling asleep randomly and uncontrollably in the middle of waking life

They generally fall directly into REM sleep

They may experience

  • Paralysis
  • Hallucinations
  • Have trouble distinguishing reality from the dreamworld

They may have REM dreams during quick naps

Why do we Dream?

Dreams help you to

  1. Learn new information
  2. Sort out your thoughts
  3. Solve problems
  4. Hear from God

Process and Store Information

Your Brain is More Active When You Dream than when you are awake

Sleep study measuring brain activity proves this

  • Process, categorize, consolidate, and store the information you took in during the day
  • More stimulated when dealing with new experience

The dream is a part of us that’s doing its best to try to express a reality that is still outside of fully articulated conscious comprehension

–Jordan Peterson

Threat simulation

The brain is preparing us for negative circumstances

Simulation

As far as the brain is concerned… We are awake

The brain is preparing itself to handle the situation

  • Fight
  • Humiliation
  • An enemy that we fear

Preparing us for situation that emotionally impact us

Your mind is searching for things that are affecting your survival

Emotional Consolidation

Have you ever gone to bed feeling bad about something but when you wake up you feel better about it?

Sleep may be a time when your brain goes through the emotions that you feel throughout the day

Some scientists suggest that a strong emotions are not a result of our dreams, but rather our dreams are result of the strong emotions we feel while we sleep

Hearing From God

Acts 2:17

AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,’ God says, ‘THAT I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND; AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS WILL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUNG MEN WILL SEE VISIONS, AND YOUR OLD MEN WILL HAVE DREAMS;

God speaks to us through dreams

God speaks to:

  • Men and Women
  • Believers and Non-Believers
  • Jews  and Gentiles

Examples

  • Pharaoh -> Joseph
  • Nebuchadnezzar > Daniel
  • King > Abraham’s wife (Sarah)
  • Three wise men

Dreams help us solve problems

  • “Sleeping on a problem“

Dreams allow you to

  • see difficult issues from a new perspective
  • See conclusions or have solutions that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to see

We tend to dream more when we are

  • Under stress
  • In new environments

This may be the brain's way of trying to solve problems in our waking life

Provide creativity and solving complex problems

Dreams have been the source of ideas to change the world

  • Google
  • The periodic table of elements
  • Envisioning the DNA double helix
  • Tesla's idea for an alternating current generator
  • Paul McCarthney: wrote “Yesterday”

Story: me

  • Bible study
  • Speeches
  • Coding solutions

Story: Sewing Machine Invention

Elias Howe

He dreamed that he was kidnapped by a tribal people and the king demanded that he invent a showing machine within 24 hours

He failed, and the tribesmen circled around them and begin jabbing him with spears and then he notice something peculiar about the tips of their spears

  • The tips had a hole in them
  • This is how a sewing needle should be

He woke up and jumped out of his sleep and went and invented the sewing machine

Solved problems during sleep

Dreamer had dream they were in a museum

Began counting paintings and realized 6 and 7 were missing

  • Ripped from their frames

Maze

Having a dream about maze increased performance 10x

Smoking

Smokers were less likely to relapse if they dreamt about smoking

Dreams help us adapt and solve problems in a way that we would not otherwise be able to do so

Interesting Facts About Dreams

How do you know you’re not dreaming right now?

You Can’t Read in Your Dreams

Because reading is a conscious activity

You can't read a clock

Everyone Dreams

Everyone dreams unless they’ve had brain damage

90 to 95% of a dream is forgotten within 10 minutes of waking up

  • The part of the brain involved with recording memories is not very active during dreams
  • This is likely so we don’t fill our brains with on useful information

You’re more prone to remember your dreams if

  • You suddenly wake up during REM sleep
  • You have the same dream repeatedly
  • Your dream contains strong emotions

Dreams Can Predict the Future

People have had dreams that predict

  • A miscarriage
  • A fatal illness
  • Getting sick

How God Uses Dreams

Joel 2:28-29

28 “It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters will prophesy, Your old men will have dreams, Your young men will see visions. 29 “And even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

Who are some people that God spoke to through dreams?

  • Abraham
  • Isaac
  • Joseph
  • Jacob
  • Daniel
  • Solomon - gave him wisdom 1 Kings 3:5-15
  • Joseph the father of Jesus

God used dreams to:

  1. Warn of negative future/current events the you can impact
  2. Revelation of His will that you will be a part of
  3. Impart you with gifts/identity
  4. Reveal Mysteries
  5. To Change Your Character/Behavior
  6. To accomplish His plan
  7. Position people in positions of influence

Warnings

Warn You That You’re in Danger

Matthew 2:13

Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him.”

  • This was also to facilitate His will

Warn of Consequences You Can Prevent

Pharaoh 7 Fat Cows 7 Skinny Cows

Genesis 41:14-28

14 Then Pharaoh sent word and called for Joseph, and they hurriedly brought him out of the dungeon; and when he had shaved himself and changed his clothes, he came to Pharaoh. 15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, but no one can interpret it; and I have heard it said about you, that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” 16 Joseph then answered Pharaoh, saying, “It has nothing to do with me; God will give Pharaoh an answer for his own good.” 17 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “In my dream, there I was, standing on the bank of the Nile; 18 and behold, seven cows, fat and fine-looking came up out of the Nile, and they grazed in the marsh grass. 19 “Then behold, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ugly and thin, such as I had never seen for ugliness in all the land of Egypt; 20 and the thin and ugly cows ate the first seven fat cows. 21 “Yet when they had devoured them, it could not be detected that they had devoured them, for they were just as ugly as before. Then I awoke. 22 “I saw also in my dream, and behold, seven ears of grain, full and good, came up on a single stalk; 23 and behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and scorched by the east wind sprouted up after them; 24 and the thin ears swallowed the seven good ears. Then I told it to the soothsayer priests, but there was no one who could explain it to me.” 25 And Joseph said to Pharaoh, “Pharaoh’s dreams are one and the same; God has told to Pharaoh what He is about to do. 26 “The seven good cows are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years; the dreams are one and the same. 27 “The seven thin and ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and the seven thin ears scorched by the east wind will be seven years of famine. 28 “It is as I have spoken to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.

  • “I cannot do it”
  • This was also to promote Joseph

Warn of Negative Future Events You Can Not Avoid

Genesis 15:12-14

12 Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, terror and great darkness fell upon him. 13 Then God said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years. 14 “But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve, and afterward they will come out with many possessions.

  • There was nothing that Abraham could do about this
  • God even said “know  for certain“

All dreams from God do not invoke peace

Sometimes there is nothing you can do but God is preparing you

  • Emotionally
  • Mentally
  • Spiritually
  • Physically

Reveal His Will

Matthew 1:20

But when he had thought this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

  • God clarified that “this is of God”

Impart Gifts

Solomon asked for wisdom in a dream

1 Kings 3:5-15

5 In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream at night; and God said, “Ask what you wish Me to give you.” 6 Then Solomon said, “You have shown great faithfulness to Your servant David my father, according as he walked before You in truth, righteousness, and uprightness of heart toward You; and You have reserved for him this great faithfulness, that You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. 7 “And now, LORD my God, You have made Your servant king in place of my father David, yet I am like a little boy; I do not know how to go out or come in. 8 “And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people who are too many to be numbered or counted. 9 “So give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, to discern between good and evil. For who is capable of judging this great people of Yours?” 10 Now it was pleasing in the sight of the Lord that Solomon had asked this thing. 11 And God said to him, “Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked for yourself a long life, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have you asked for the lives of your enemies, but have asked for yourself discernment to understand justice, 12 behold, I have done according to your words. Behold, I have given you a wise and discerning heart, so that there has been no one like you before you, nor shall one like you arise after you. 13 “I have also given you what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there will not be any among the kings like you all your days. 14 “And if you walk in My ways, keeping My statutes and commandments, as your father David walked, then I will prolong your days.” 15 Then Solomon awoke, and behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and made peace offerings, and held a feast for all his servants.

  • This is an encounter with God happening in a dream
  • God was visiting Solomon in his dream

Solomon had an actual encounter with God in a dream

Solomon received spiritual impartation through his dream

Reveal Information (Mysteries)

Daniel 2:28

“However, there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the latter days. This was your dream and the visions in your mind while on your bed.

This can be a revelation of

  • Motives of the others
  • Interpretations of dreams and visions

To Change Your Character/Behavior

Job 33:14-18

14 “Indeed God speaks once, Or twice, yet no one notices it. 15 “In a dream, a vision of the night, When deep sleep falls on people, While they slumber in their beds, 16 Then He opens the ears of people, And horrifies them with warnings, 17 So that He may turn a person away from bad conduct, And keep a man from pride; 18 He keeps his soul back from the pit, And his life from perishing by the spear.

God may frighten you in your dream in order to get you to change your behavior

Change your

  • Character / Behaviour
  • Future actions

To Accomplish His Plan

Genesis 20:1-7

1 Now Abraham journeyed from there toward the land of the Negev, and settled between Kadesh and Shur; then he lived for a time in Gerar. 2 And Abraham said of his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.” So Abimelech king of Gerar sent men and took Sarah. 3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream of the night, and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is married.” 4 Now Abimelech had not come near her; and he said, “Lord, will You kill a nation, even though blameless? 5 “Did he himself not say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this.” 6 Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that in the integrity of your heart you have done this, and I also kept you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her. 7 “Now then, return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, know that you will certainly die, you and all who are yours.”

Abraham was too afraid to tell the king that Sara was his wife

But God protected her from the king

Practical Tip: Start Writing Down Your Dreams

Daniel 7:1

In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel saw a dream and visions in his mind as he lay on his bed; then he wrote the dream down and told the following summary of it.

  • Write your dreams down
  • God may be speaking to you

Keep a dream journal

  • Keep a notepad by your bedside
  • Write down your dreams as soon as you wake up
  • Refer to your notes to see if any themes are occurring

If you don’t record your dreams as soon as you wake up… Errors may occur

Write down the details

  • Including Emotional tone

Positioning Yourself to Hear From God

Paul had a vision while he was praying

Acts 22:17-22 (NASB20) 17 “It happened when I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, that I fell into a trance, 18 and I saw Him saying to me, ‘Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about Me.’ 19 “And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves understand that in one synagogue after another I used to imprison and beat those who believed in You. 20 ‘And when the blood of Your witness Stephen was being shed, I also was standing nearby and approving, and watching over the cloaks of those who were killing him.’ 21 “And He said to me, ‘Go! For I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’” 22 They listened to him up to this statement, and then they raised their voices and said, “Away with such a man from the earth, for he should not be allowed to live!”

As you increase your prayer life… You become more susceptible to God‘s dreams and visions

Spontaneous prayer produces longevity

Scheduled prayer produces depth

There is a death that you go into where you begin to see visions

Prayers like digging a well

  • Every shovel is full of dirt until you hit water

John was worshiping when he saw a vision

Revelation 1:9-13 (NASB20) 9 I, John, your brother and fellow participant in the tribulation and kingdom and perseverance in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like the sound of a trumpet, 11 saying, “Write on a scroll what you see, and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.” 12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And after turning I saw seven golden lampstands; 13 and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and wrapped around the chest with a golden sash.

Isaiah was serving when he saw visions

Isaiah 6:1-8 (NASB20) 1 In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. 2 Seraphim were standing above Him, each having six wings: with two each covered his face, and with two each covered his feet, and with two each flew. 3 And one called out to another and said, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of armies. The whole earth is full of His glory.” 4 And the foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out, while the temple was filling with smoke. 5 Then I said, “Woe to me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of armies.” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal in his hand, which he had taken from the altar with tongs. 7 He touched my mouth with it and said, “Behold, this has touched your lips; and your guilt is taken away and atonement is made for your sin.” 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

To Influence Your Decisions/Actions

Matthew 27:17-19

17So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18For he knew that it was because of envy that [g]they had handed Him over.

19And while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “See that you have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.”
