Review of Spiritual Warfare
We have an unseen enemy…the devil
The devil and demons are real
Curses
a solemn utterance intended to invoke a supernatural power to inflict harm or punishment on someone or something
–Oxford dictionary
To be put under a curse is to authorize a condition on your life that attracts harm
To be put under a blessing is to authorize a condition on your life that attracts positive
- A Christian can’t be put under a curse
- A Christian can be spiritually attacked
Generational Curses
- Jesus redeemed us from the curses of the law
- This means that God doesn’t punish us for our sins or the sins of our ancestors
- The curses of the law don’t apply to Christians
- No generational curses from God
- Although demons will strategies against families
We repeat patterns of sin and negative consequences based on
- Strongholds
- Genetics
- Following parents examples
- Coping mechanisms
- Conflict/argument styles
- Parenting techniques
- Relationship roles
- Gender roles
- Relationship expectations
- Mindset / view of life
Review Territorial Spirits
There are spirit beings that influence geographical areas (E.g. nations)
- Old Testament refers to them as Sons of God, gods, goddesses
- Other nations worship them as idols
Daniel referred to them as Princes
- Prince of Persia
- Prince of Greece
- Michael - Prince over Israel
God’s warns us not to ___ them
- Worship
- Consult
- Petition
Paul refers to them as
- Rulers
- Authorities
- Principalities
1 Corinthians 8:5-6
5 For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), 6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.- There are beings in Heaven referred to as “gods”
- We worship God alone
Armor of God
Ephesians 6: 10 - 18
Paul speak of these rulers, principalities and authorities
- In Heavenly places
- They have not been cast out of Heaven
They influence the culture of a nation
We defeat them with
- Living a life of “truthfulness”
- Moral righteousness
- Believing the gospel of Jesus Christ
- Having faith in God
- Having the hope of salvation
- Reading the bible
- Hearing and obeying the Holy Spirit
- Led by the Spirit
What is a Demon?
Most Cultures Believe in Demons
- Middle East / Muslim / Asia - jinn and the evil eye
- Latin America - La Llorona
- Japan - Baku
- Africa - Ancestral spirits, water spirits
Daemon
The Greek word daemon refers to any spiritual being whether it is good or evil.
- God or goddess
- Lesser supernatural being
- Disembodied human spirit
Analogous to old testament “elohim”
King James never uses the word demon.
- It will always say “devils“
In the New Testament, Demon generally refers to a disembodied spirit that is hostile to God.
Terms for spirits that harm humans
- Unclean spirits
- Evil spirits
- Demons
- Familiar spirits
- Devils
- Seducing spirits
- Foul spirit
Some passages use “evil spirits” to mean sicknesses or mental diseases.
Where Do Demons Come From?
Theories
- Fallen angels
- Disembodied spirits of a pre-Adamic race
- Disembodied spirits of the Nephilim who died during the flood
Not Fallen Angels
Demons don’t have bodies (Matthew 12:43-45)
Example: When Jesus was walking on water they said “it’s a ghost” not “it’s a demon”
Fallen angels are sentenced to “the pit” awaiting judgment (2 Peter 2:4-5)
Demons Cannot be Fallen Angels

Arguments against the gap theory
Genesis is not chronological
Genesis 3 is a more detailed version of Genesis 2
- Similar to Genesis 10 and 11 (Shem)
Death was not in the world before (Adam’s) sin - Romans 5:12
Nephilim
The Jews believed that demons were disembodied spirits of the Nephilim
Tamunefal = Tamu (one who is dead or buried) + Nephal (singular for Nephilim)
- Common word for demon at the time of Christ
- Dead Nephilim
Book of Enoch
- Referenced in Jude and 2 Peter
- Not canon
“Unclean spirit” is used to designate that the origin of these spirits is from the unnatural mixture of humans and spirit beings.
Demons are disembodied spirits of the Nephilim
Types of Demons / Spirits in Bible
Some different demons have different abilities
- Seducing spirits (1 Tim 4:1)
- seduce people away from the faith
- Spirit of infirmity (Luke 13:11)
- Cause sickness
- They aren’t the sickness
- Miracle working (Rev 16:14)
- Perform miraculous acts in order to persuade people from the faith
- Spirit of divination (Acts 16:16)
- Tell the future
- The devouring (Malachi 3:11)
- Attacks your finances
- Spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7)
- Spirit of deception ( Isaiah 19:13-15)
- Confusion, distortion
- Mute ( Matthew 8:32-33)
- Deaf and Mute (Mark 1:24)
Satan is Not a Demon
Satan is a fallen Heavenly being
Satan Gets Permission From God
Job 1:6-12^
- God was meeting with Sons of God
- Satan came and asked for permission to attack Job
Matthew 4:1
1Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Luke 22:31-32
31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat;
32 but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”
- Satan wanted to harm Peter
- Apparently God said ok
- Jesus didn’t rebuke satan
- Jesus prayed for Peter
Satan is not omnipresent
He can’t be at our church and in a church in Beijing at the same time
Satan is not at the same level as God
Evil Spirits From God
Sent as punishment for wickedness
- These are not demons
- These are “angels” executing judgment from God
- “Evil” refers to the action they will perform against a human not their allegiance
1 Kings 22:19-23
19 Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne with all the multitudes of heaven standing around him on his right and on his left. 20 And the LORD said, ‘Who will entice Ahab into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?’ “One suggested this, and another that. 21 Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD and said, ‘I will entice him.’ 22 “ ‘By what means?’ the LORD asked. “ ‘I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,’ he said. “ ‘You will succeed in enticing him,’ said the LORD. ‘Go and do it.’ 23 “So now the LORD has put a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The LORD has decreed disaster for you.”
- This is another one of those meetings like in Job
- National rulers can have their free will overridden by God
- God won’t interfere with your free will, but other spirits will
1 Samuel 16:14
14 Now the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD tormented him.
- The spirit was from God
- Notice that the “Spirit of the LORD” had to depart from Saul before the other spirit could torment him
1 Samuel 18:10-11
10 The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully on Saul. He was prophesying in his house, while David was playing the lyre, as he usually did. Saul had a spear in his hand 11 and he hurled it, saying to himself, “I’ll pin David to the wall.” But David eluded him twice.
There are other cases where God uses an “evil spirit” to enact judgment on evil doers. It is up to God to decide how evil is punished. By definition, punishment of evil is just.
- E.g. The death penalty
This is done to influence national rulers
- God can override the free will of national rulers (using other spirits)
Demon Possession
- People are demon possessed today
Spirit possession is an unusual or altered state of consciousness and associated behaviors purportedly caused by the control of a human body by spirits, ghosts, demons, or gods.
–Wikipedia
True demonic possession describes a person being taken over by an intruding alien entity which is usually referred to and known as a demon. Almost all of the symptoms of apparent demonic possession, which are often portrayed in highly dramatic ways in films and ‘mockumentaries’ about deliverance and exorcism (including aversion to religious symbols, changes in voice, multiple personalities, and uninhibited rage) can be attributed to factors other than the demonic. In fact, true demonic possession is extremely rare. Most cases of spiritual crises, which are presented and assessed in the context of deliverance ministry, range between spiritual temptation and spiritual oppression.
– Church of England
Can a Christian Be Demon possessed?
It is hotly debated whether or not Christians can be possessed by demons
In Greek, words like “possess“ refer to ownership.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you have been bought for a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
- This was written to sinful believers
The assumption is that you can’t be a temple of the Holy Spirit and house the demon at the same time
1 John 4:4
You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.
- Two spirits cannot indwell the same body at the same time
While the Bible does not explicitly state whether a Christian can be possessed by a demon, related biblical truths make it abundantly clear that Christians cannot be demon possessed. There is a distinct difference between being possessed by a demon and being oppressed or influenced by a demon. Demon possession involves a demon having direct/complete control over the thoughts and/or actions of a person (Matthew 17:14-18; Luke 4:33-35; 8:27-33). Demon oppression or influence involves a demon or demons attacking a person spiritually and/or encouraging him/her into sinful behavior.
—GotQuestions.org
Demons cannot (Christians)
- Own you
- Attach themselves to you
- Live within you
- Control your physical capacities
- Enter you
The only exception might be if a Christian willingly submitted their body over the the control of a spirit
*We cannot deny the fact that there are people who claim to be Christians who appear to be demon possessed
Possession vs Oppression
Possession is
- Control
- Indwelling
Christians Can Be
- Persecuted
- Tempted
- Harassed
- Captivated by false teaching
- Enslavement to sin
Signs of Demonic Possession
Signs of demonic possession
- Obsession with death
- Morbid thinking
- Supernatural ability
- Strength
- Violence or barbaric behavior
- Mental instability
- Self harm
- Physical
- Words
- Very uncomfortable in the manifested presence of God
- Addiction
- slavery mentality
- Obsession with the occult
- Contempt for God‘s authority
- Suicidal tendencies
- Sickness
- Spreading demonic/unbiblical doctrines
- Manipulative personality
- Torment
- Depression
- Fear
*everyone has some of these traits at some time so don’t get paranoid and assume you are possessed because you have one or two of the “normal” signs
Legion
Mark 5:2-13
2 When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him. 3 He lived among the tombs; and no one was able to bind him anymore, not even with a chain, 4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces; and no one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and cutting himself with stones. 6 Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; 7 and shouting with a loud voice, he said, “What business do You have with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!” 8 For He had already been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 And He was asking him, “What is your name?” And he said to Him, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” 10 And he begged Him earnestly not to send them out of the region. 11 Now there was a large herd of pigs feeding nearby on the mountain. 12 And the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us into the pigs so that we may enter them.” 13 Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the pigs; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea.
What we see
- Jesus never used the name “Legion” to cast out the demon
- The demon said the name “Jesus”
Deliverance Ministry Teachings
What is deliverance?
In Christian terms, deliverance is defined as release from evil spiritual influences which oppress a person or hinder the individual’s response to God’s saving grace.
Cat deliverance

What is deliverance ministry
The generally agreed-upon definition of “deliverance ministry” will usually focus on the casting out of demons or spirits in an attempt to solve problems related to specific demons. For example, a deliverance minister may seek to help someone overcome anger by casting out a spirit of anger. Deliverance ministries also focus on tearing down spiritual strongholds in one’s life, finding inner healing, and claiming the victory in Christ over all enemies. Many refer to soul ties, curses, and the “legal rights” of demons.
—Got Questions.org
Christian exorcism could be defined as the rite of casting out evil spirits, based on the example of Christ and the apostles. It is the specific act of binding and releasing, performed on a person who is believed to be possessed by a non-human malevolent spirit.
–House of Bishops
Mark 16: 15-18
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 The one who has believed and has been baptized will be saved; but the one who has not believed will be condemned. 17 These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not harm them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Some deliverance ministries claims
- Deliverance is the majority of what Jesus did in his ministry
- There is no indication that this gift has ceased
- Demons can possess a Christians flesh but not the spirit
- They can have a demon living in their body
- The Holy Spirit cannot live in the flesh
- Items can be cursed to possess demons
- The devil has strength when we give up our authority through sin
- Christ's authority is our authority because we are seated in heavenly places with Christ.
They believe exorcism as a tool for
- Dealing with temptation
- Casting out demons
- Breaking generational curses
Demonic Access given by
- Occult activity
- Sin
- Unforgiveness
- Drugs
- Hallucinatinagenics
- Repeated sexual abuse
- Bitterness
- Idolatry
- Witchcraft
- Trauma
- Unforgiveness
Deliverance Methods
Cast demons out by
- Name of Jesus
- Bind and then rebuking
- Plead the blood of Jesus
- Getting the demon’s name
- Olive oil
- Fasting
- Praying
- Renounce your involvement in any witchcraft/occult activity
- Holy Water
Exorcism
- If Satan has a legal right to be there it could take hours.
- Demons can’t say the name of Jesus
We will examine which of these claims are biblical and which are not
Criticisms Against Deliverance Ministries
It is unclear how big a part demon exorcism is meant to play in modern evangelism. A conservative view is preferable because of the very real threat of abuse. Too many Christian circles consider every illness, sin, and run of bad experiences to be caused by direct demonic involvement. It is abuse to subject people to "exorcisms" when they have a very real need of doctors, counselors, or just job training. We can functionally "cast out demons" without exorcising. Speaking truth does very real damage to Satan's work. Truth will free people from bonds of sin—both their own and others (John 8:31–32).
Blaming everything on demons denies our fallen nature
If you blame yourself from demons then you have absolved yourself from personal responsibility
James 1:13-14
13 No one is to say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.
The Christians primary enemy is not the devil
- It is the flesh
Note: curing addictions
- Caused by demons = immediate
- Flesh = over time
There is no instruction in the epistle on any of this
The Bible doesn’t discuss in detail what a believer should and should not do.
Issues
- Gives too much power to “our words”
- Specific methods not from bible
Interviewing Demons
https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxPktnHEDWjHb6-W-4j4Vg3LvWnOZrEXIT
- Demons as a source of information
- Occult as source of information
Keeps You In Bondage
Some Christians are afraid that they will open the door giving demons access if they
- Talk about demons
- Read scripture about demons
- Touch an object
- Go to a website
- Have the wrong book or object in their house
- Forgot to announce something they did in the past
The Doctrine says we have power and authority but people are more fearful
Binding and Loosing
Verses about binding aren’t about spiritual warfare
Who Keeps Loosening Satan?
https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxXnCsWPU9kgu-4KVx5JowliJtdaeAx88_
Satan is not bound. Rev 20 - he’ll be bound in the future
*Jesus does talk about “binding the strong man”
Rebuking Satan
Don’t Rebuke High Ranking Angels
Rebuke: express sharp disapproval or criticism of (someone) because of their behavior or actions.
* The Bible speaks of rebuking demons, but not Satan
2 Peter 2:10-11
10 and especially those who indulge the flesh in its corrupt passion, and despise authority.
Reckless, self-centered, they speak abusively of angelic majesties without trembling, 11 whereas angels who are greater in might and power do not bring a demeaning judgment against them before the Lord
- This is talking about false prophets
Jude 1:9
9 But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, "The Lord rebuke you!"
The bible tells us not to rebuke Satan
- We can Ask God to rebuke him
Issues:
- It’s probably a demon attacking you and not satan
- If it’s Satan he may have gotten permission
- We are taking our focus off of God… And putting it on to Satan
- Calling a demon “Satan” is giving it too much honor
- Jesus resisted Satan
- He didn’t rebuke him or cast him out like he did the demons
The two words the scripture uses for us regarding Satan are
- Resist the devil ( James 4:7)
- Stand
Denies the Need for God
People want to be in control and not depend on God
If we had all of this authority… There would be no need for Christ
- It is an elevation of man
Jewish Exorcism
Tools commonly used for exorcism in Jesus’ time
- Incense
- Potions
- Rings
- Balls of water
- Amulets
- Ashes
- Various spices
Example: The Chosen
Exorcisms existed before Jesus was born, so why shouldn’t it exist now
The main question is how much focus do you give it
Story: Zac Poonen
He delivered a man from a demon and the man wanted to give a testimony in the church
- “We don’t celebrate being freed from demons… We celebrate being freed from sins”
Biblical Deliverance
In biblical deliverance we see
- Jesus drove demonic beings out instantly
- Demons addressing the exorcist Mark 1:24;5:7
- Verbal demands made of demons Mark 1:25; 5:9;9:25
- “Come out of him!”; “What is your name?”
- Demons sent from person to another living being
- Anointing oil used
- Casting out demons cured sickness
- Jesus didn’t pray to cast out demons
- Demons can say the name “Jesus”
Demon Can Says “Jesus”
Problem with creating a doctrine from your experiences
Mark 1:23-27
23 Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24 saying, “What business do you have with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are: the Holy One of God!” 25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 After throwing him into convulsions and crying out with a loud voice, the unclean spirit came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”
- Demons can say the name of Jesus
Demons Don’t Want Allow People to Say Jesus - Zach Poonen
0:36 - 2:06
That is the problem when you get your doctrine from experiences versus the Bible. Demons will try to get you to believe a lie.
Matthew 12:43-45 (NASB20)
43 “Now when the unclean spirit comes out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and does not find it. 44 “Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came’; and when it comes, it finds it unoccupied, swept, and put in order. 45 “Then it goes and brings along with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they come in and live there; and the last condition of that person becomes worse than the first. That is the way it will also be with this evil generation.”
- Demons lose strength when they are without a human vessel

Authority
Name of Jesus
Mark 9:38-41
38John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone else driving out demons in Your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not accompany us.”
39“Do not stop him,” Jesus replied. “For no one who performs a miracle in My name can turn around and speak evil of Me. 40For whoever is not against us is for us. 41Indeed, if anyone gives you even a cup of water because you bear the name of Christ, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.
“In my name”
- In my power
- In my authority
- In my stead
- By my will
7 Sons of Sceva
Authority doesn’t come just by saying the phrase “in the name of Jesus“
There is nothing wrong with saying it
There is nothing magical about saying it

What if the demons aren’t responding?
Matthew 17:19-21
19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” 20 And He said to them, “Because of your meager faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” 21[But this type only comes out through prayer and fasting]
Reasons given for not working
- Unbelief
- Need prayer and fasting
The lack of faith takes you out of alignment with the authority
Can you see the Holy Spirit getting tired and saying… This one is a tough one?
What if the Demon Doesn’t Come Out?
https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkxi36-o2utLqth4wdgvmUV6NAWNtzQU7vz
- Is this person really demon possessed
- Does this person want to be set free?
- Is this person really saved?
- You need to fast and pray
Free From Bondage
John 14:27
“Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor fearful.
Story: 6 years ago
- studied deliverance / demonology
- Always binding demons and satan
- Put quotes over my doors
- Threw out books and statues
- Was afraid I needed to study the right prayers and words to say
- I need a special prayer for
- Dream protection
- Soul ties
- Finances
- Demonic attack
- Anger
- Witches / sorcery
- Occult ties
- Ancestors sin
- Removing curses from objects in my house
- Places I went that day
- Websites visited
- Renounce everything
Experienced greater demonic activity
My faith was in saying the right words
Less peace than before I knew about demons
I envisioned demons saying
- “Oh he didn’t plead the blood of Jesus, so we’re good”
- He forgot to bind me first
Afraid to teach this lesson
If your doctrine leaves you living in fear that
- Didn’t say the right words
- forget to rebuke something
It’s putting you in bondage
Where do you see demonic activity?
- Countries where occult activities are practiced
- Churches with Deliverance ministries
If we have Jesus’ authority then we have Jesus authority
- Our authority is by faith alone
- Satan wants to make you doubt
We don’t have to have the “magic words”
- That’s occult practices
If you have the authority of Jesus you are operating in the “name of Jesus”
- It’s not based on saying “In the name of Jesus”
- It’s not based on saying the right sequence of words
- It is not based on you remembering and renouncing things of the past
If your theology is making you afraid… there’s a problem
Your faith shouldn’t be in your words
- Your faith shouldn’t be in your works
My faith should be in Jesus

Luke 1:19-20 (ESV)
19 And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.”
Why did Gabriel say “I stand in the presence of God”?
Evil Spirits from God
Judges 9:22-23 (NIV)
22 After Abimelek had governed Israel three years, 23 God stirred up animosity between Abimelek and the citizens of Shechem so that they acted treacherously against Abimelek.
Christian Faith and Demonology
- The Vatican
For all the above, finally, the names of Satan and of the devil are only mythical or functional personifications, the significance of which is solely to underline in a dramatic fashion the hold which evil and sin have on mankind. They are only words, which it is up to our times to decipher, even at the cost of having to find another way of inculcating into Christians the duty of struggling against all the forms of evil in the world.
…
Without ever placing Satan at the centre of his Gospel, Jesus nevertheless only spoke of him on what were clearly crucial occasions and by means of important pronouncements.
The Sadducees didn’t believe in demons
1. They did not believe in the validity of the interpretations of the Torah. They took the words at face value
2. Humanity was meant to be self-sufficient. Sadducees denied God’s investment in our everyday life.
3. They denied that there was any sort of afterlife. When a person died so did their soul. The only punishment or reward was during the person’s lifetime.
4. They did not believe in a spiritual world meaning they didn’t believe in angels or demons.
A remark in the Acts of the Apostles, clarifying a dispute which had arisen among the members of the Sanhedrin concerning a statement made by Saint Paul, shows us in fact that, in contrast to the Pharisees, the Sadducees admitted “neither resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit”, which, as good exegetes understand it, means that they no more believed in angels and demons than in the resurrection of the body (3). Thus, on the subject of Satan and demons, as on that of angels, contemporary opinion seems to have been clearly split into two diametrically opposed views.

Where You Find Demonic Possession
Demon possession starts to decrease dramatically as the level of civilization and education increases.
You see it more in places where people believe in it
- Countries where occultism is practiced
- Churches with deliverance ministries
Can Christians Be Possessed?
Christians Can Fall Under the Influence of Evil Spirits
We might ask “ can Christians come under a high degree of influence by a demonic spirit” or “ is it possible for Christians to yield control of their bodies to a demonic spirit in the same ways that they yield to the power of sin?“
…yes
1 Timothy 4:1 (NIV) The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.
- These are believers.
They did not see what they were doing as being out of step with the faith.
Deliverance Ministry
House of Bishops
The House of Bishops’ guidelines on the deliverance ministry, which were established in 1975, state:
The following factors should be borne in mind:
1. It should be done in collaboration with the resources of medicine.
2. It should be done in the context of prayer and sacrament.
3. It should be done with the minimum of publicity.
4. It should be done by experienced persons authorized by the diocesan bishop.
5. It should be followed up by continuing pastoral care’.
I also recommend that parish priests who are involved in local cases are told about eight ‘golden rules’iii regarding cases which involve enquiries about paranormal phenomena and deliverance ministry issues:
1. Always look for a natural or psychological explanation before going for the supernatural or paranormal one.
2. Bring love and reassurance. The quality of care often does more to help the situation than doing all the right things.
3. Do not collude with other people’s prejudices or demonologies, but be sympathetic.
4. Always overcome evil with good and avoid any hint of Christian ‘magic’.
5. Proclaim the victory of Christ in what is said and done: preach the gospel
in every situation.
6. Seek help, advice and supervision.
7. Remember that deliverance ministry is only one area of ministry and don’t
give it prominence it doesn’t deserve.
8. Avoid too narrow a view of evil - and don’t be blinded to the real evils in
society and the battle for peace and justice.
In the major exorcism, the exorcist commands the spiritual or demonic force to depart from the client, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and to go to the place appointed by Almighty God for that evil spirit or demon, doing no harm on the way and never to return.
A major exorcism is not a medical placebo to be ministered to a patient/client who is not truly demonically possessed.

People cannot be possessed today because
- Satan has been bound (Zach 13:1-2; Luke 10:18; 11:21-23; John 12:31; Romans 8:35)
- Demonic possession ceased in the Apostolic era (Acts 5:16; 8:7)
- Satan works through deception (not possession)
- 2 Corinthians 11:13-14
- James 4:7
- Modern demon possessions are variant emotional disturbances
- Obsession
- Dissociation
- Somnambulism
- sleep walking
- Contagion Syndromes
- Mob syndrome
The Gospels and Acts relate that Jesus and the disciples cast out demons. The teaching portions of the New Testament (Romans through Jude) refer to demonic activity yet do not discuss the method of casting them out, nor are believers exhorted to do so. We are told to put on the whole armor of God to stand against spiritual wickedness (Ephesians 6:10–18). We are told to resist the devil (James 4:7) and not give him room in our lives (Ephesians 4:27). However, we are not told how to cast him or his demons out of others, or that we should even consider doing so.

Prayer of the Elders
James 5:14-15
14Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.
Luke 10:17
17Now the seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name!” 18And He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like lightning. 19Behold, I have given you authority to walk on snakes and scorpions, and authority over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. 20 Nevertheless, do not [k]rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”
1 Peter 5: 8-9
8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 So resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brothers and sisters who are in the world.
Biblical Deliverance
Fortune Teller
Acts 16:16-19 (NASB20)
16 It happened that as we were going to the place of prayer, a slave woman who had a spirit of divination met us, who was bringing great profit to her masters by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and us and cried out repeatedly, saying, “These men are bond-servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you a way of salvation.” 18 Now she continued doing this for many days. But Paul was greatly annoyed, and he turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” And it came out at that very moment. 19 But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was suddenly gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities,

People possessed by demons Often put themselves into bondage
- Victim mentality
- Addiction
- Submit it to an evil person
- low self respect
- Low self-esteem
A sign is an
- obsession with demonic forces (occult)
- Contempt for authority
Sickness
Acts 10:38 (NASB20)
“You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
Sickness is not unto itself a demon
But demons can cause sickness
Demonic Doctrines
1 Timothy 4:1-3 (NASB20)
1 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, 3 who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth.
Some doctrines
- Keep people bound
- Seem to set people free, but put them in a more complex bondage
Signs
- Demonic doctrine
- Manipulative personality
- Manipulation is the tactical approach to deception
Saul
1 Samuel 16:14 (NLT - only)
Now the Spirit of the LORD had left Saul, and the LORD sent a tormenting spirit that filled him with depression and fear.
Signs
- Torment
- Depression
- Fear
Matthew 8:16 (NASB20)
Now when evening came, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill.
Jesus Jesus asked the demons name, but he never used the name
He drove that demon out with a simple command
Matthew 9:32-33 (NASB20) 32 And as they were going out, behold, a demon-possessed man who was unable to speak was brought to Him. 33 And after the demon was cast out, the man who was previously unable to speak talked; and the crowds were amazed, and were saying, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”
- This was something that hadn’t happened before
Initially Jesus and the disciples only went to the Jews.
7 Sons of Sceva
Acts 19:11-20
11 And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them. 13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” 14 Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. 15 But the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?” 16 And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all[d] of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled. 18 Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices. 19 And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.
