The Seven Spirits of God
Some bible versions translate it as 'the sevenfold Spirits of God’' (e.g. Amplified, Complete Jewish Bible, Living Bible, New Living Translation). The Greek clearly states 'seven spirits'.
Rev 1:1
1The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show to His bond-servants, the things which must soon take place; and He sent and communicated it by His angel to His bond-servant John,
- Jesus communicated with John through “His angel”
- Jesus is telling John what to write
- When John quotes someone, he’s quoting Jesus
Rev 1:12-16
12I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man,d dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. 14The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. 15His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. 16In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.
- Who was this person that was like the son of man?
- Jesus
- What was in His right hand?
- 7 stars
- What else were there 7 of?
- 7 gold lampstands
- What is the purpose of a lampstand?
- to hold a lamp
- the lampstand does not produce light on its own
- What else does it say about Jesus?
- Jesus had a double edged sword
- His feet are like bronze glowing in a furnace
Rev 1:20
20“As for the mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
- The 7 stars are angels to the churches
- remember Satan took ⅓ of the stars when he fell
- The seven lampstands are 7 churches
- There is an assigned to mediate to each church
Rev 2:1
These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands.
- Who is the one who holds the seven stars?
- Jesus
Rev 2:8

He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars, says this: ‘I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.
- Who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars?
- Jesus
- they by definition they belong to God
- but Jesus “has them” also
- The 7 Spirits of God are not the 7 stars
- not the angels
- Jesus has both the 7 Spirits and the 7 angels
Rev 4:5-6
5Out from the throne come flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder. And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God; 6and before the throne there was something like a sea of glass, like crystal; and in the center and around the throne, four living creatures full of eyes in front and behind.
- the seven lamps of fire are the Spirits of God
Rev 5:6
6And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth.

Similar Language From Zechariah
Zechariah 1:8-11
8During the night I had a vision, and there before me was a man mounted on a red horse. He was standing among the myrtle trees in a ravine. Behind him were red, brown and white horses.
9I asked, “What are these, my lord?”
The angel who was talking with me answered, “I will show you what they are.”
10Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, “They are the ones the Lord has sent to go throughout the earth.”
11And they reported to the angel of the Lord who was standing among the myrtle trees, “We have gone throughout the earth and found the whole world at rest and in peace.”
- there was a man on a red horse talking to Zechariah
- The Angel of the Lord (Jesus) was standing among the myrtle trees
- Jesus sent the horses throughout the earth to come back and report to Him
- This is similar to the seven spirits that are sent out by Jesus
Zech 4:1-10
1Then the angel who talked with me returned and woke me up, like someone awakened from sleep. 2He asked me, “What do you see?”
I answered, “I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven channels to the lamps. 3Also there are two olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.”
4I asked the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?”
5He answered, “Do you not know what these are?”
“No, my lord,” I replied.
6So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.
7“What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’ ”
8Then the word of the Lord came to me: 9“The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you.
10“Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the Lord that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstonea in the hand of Zerubbabel?”
[
11Then I asked the angel, “What are these two olive trees on the right and the left of the lampstand?”
12Again I asked him, “What are these two olive branches beside the two gold pipes that pour out golden oil?”
13He replied, “Do you not know what these are?”
“No, my lord,” I said.
]
- Zerubbabel is the governor of Judah who restored the temple
- We see a gold lampstand with seven lamps on it
What/Who Are The 7 Spirits of God?
What We Know So Far
Seven stars
- Jesus possesses seven stars which are alongside the seven spirits (Revelation 3.4)
- The 'seven stars' are the seven angels that stand on behalf of the seven churches (Revelation 1.20).
- Given the distinction between angels and spirits here we can conclude that the 7 Spirits aren’t angels
Seven Lampstands
- The 7 lampstands are the seven churches (Rev 1:20)
Seven lamps of fire
- The seven lamps of fire are the seven spirits of God (Rev 4:5)
- So the seven spirits function as a 'light' within the seven churches.
- The seven churches “hold or support” the seven spirits
Seven eyes
- the seven eyes were the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth' (Revelation 5.6)
- this is similar to the horses seen in Zechariah’s first vision
Rev 1:4-5
4John,
To the seven churches in the province of Asia:
Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spiritsa before his throne, 5and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.
- How is this greeting different than the other?
- it is from 3 parties while all the others were from a single party
- Who are the 3 parties?
- God, the seven spirits, and Jesus
- all the other greetings are from Jesus
- the seven spirits are listed before Jesus and after God
We already see that since angels, and the church are explicitly referenced that it’s not likely that the seven spirits refer to either of these. It would seem strange to reference some non-diety in between two members of the Godhead - God, blank, and Jesus. We also note that most of the other spirit beings are shown to worship God, yet there is no mention of the “seven spirits” worshipping God.
All of the other greetings are from Jesus. When delivering greetings from multiple people, the messenger will usually list them by order of importance. This greeting lists: God, the 7 Seven Spirits, and Jesus. Since God and Jesus are one, it would follow that the 7 Spirits are at the same “level” as Jesus and God. It’s unlikely that these could refer to attributes of God in this sentence.
The seven spirits of God must be equivalent to the Holy Spirit.
This implies that the Holy Spirit can reveal Himself in multiple ways. This could suggest that the Holy Spirit is revealed differently to the different churches.
Note that if the seven Spirits of God don’t represent the Holy Spirit then there is no mention of the Holy Spirit at all!
What are the different manifestations of the Holy Spirit?
The 7 Manifestations of The Holy Spirit
Many point at Isaiah 11:2 as a list of these parts of the Holy Spirit
Isaiah 11:1-2
1Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse,
And a branch from his roots will bear fruit.
2The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him,
The spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The spirit of counsel and strength,
The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
The verse is often interpreted as pointing to these 7 Spirits of God:
- Spirit of the Lord
- Spirit of Wisdom
- Spirit of Understanding
- Spirit of Counsel
- Spirit of Strength
- Spirit of Knowledge
- Spirit of Fear of the Lord
Opponents of this view of this state that this is only really a lists of 3. Saying it states He’ll be filled with the Spirit of the Lord and then describes its components:
- The Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding
- The Spirit of Counsel and Strength
- The Spirit of Knowledge of the Lord
It may also refer to the seven qualities mentioned in 2 Peter 1:5-7.
2 Peter 1:5-7
5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.
- goodness
- knowledge
- self-control
- perseverance
- godliness
- mutual affection
- love
Romans 12:6-8
6We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with youra faith; 7if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,b do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
- insight (prophecy);
- helpfulness (service or ministry);
- instruction (teaching);
- encouragement;
- generosity (giving);
- guidance (leadership);
- compassion.
The Tabernacle
Hebrews 8:1-5
1Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, 2and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.
3Every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer. 4If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already priests who offer the gifts prescribed by the law. 5They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”a
The Tabernacle was a reflection of what is in Heaven. Therefore if we want to understand what is in Heaven we can look at the model God gave us.
Outer Court
Brazen Altar
- was used for blood sacrifice.
Bronze Laver
- which was for cleansing.
- The water used here was pure and would be like a mirror so you could see yourself before entering the inner court.
- The laver symbolized judgement by the word.
- It was made of the looking glasses of the women.
The Holy Place / Inner Court
The Holy Place resembles what we described in Revelations
Table of showbread (North)
The table of showbread had 12 loaves of bread representing the 12 tribes of Israel
- This symbolizes the elders
The Altar of Incense
- Then before the veil is the altar of incense.
- In the Tabernacle the high priest stood before the altar of incense interceding for the prayers of the Israelites.
- In Revelations an angel stood before the incense
The Seven Lamps (South)
- Symbolizes the 7 Spirits of God = The Holy Spirit
- The lampstand symbolizes the 7 churches
In many translations, the word candlestick is used, but there was no wax used in the Tabernacle of Moses, or in the Temple of God, because wax distorts. That is why they used oil. The oil and fire are representative of the Holy Spirit.
Holy of Holies
On the other side of the veil is the Holy of Holies which held the Ark of the Covenant where God Himself descended and the Glory of God made came there. This is a replica of the throne of Revelations.
In Revelations we saw that in the throne room there were: God, Jesus, the seven Spirits of God and the elders. We read that the tabernacle was a shadow or replica of what was in Heaven. We see that the arc represents God’s throne, the altar of incense represented the altar of incense in Heaven where the angels God the prayers to present to God. And the gold lampstand symbolizes the church, and the seven lamps symbolize the Holy Spirit.
Conclusion
Last week we saw that “face to face” encounters with God in the Old Testament often involved Jesus. We are beginning to see that whenever the Father acts there is usually an involvement of Jesus and the Holy Spirit as well.
We saw that Jesus “holds” the 7 Spirits, 7 angels and the 7 churches. Jesus uses all of these parties to bring God’s plan to fruition.
1 Corinthians 3:9
9For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building
We are the lampstands supporting the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the light of the church. We would have no light if not for the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit we would be indistinguishable from the darkness.
Summary
- We saw that the seven Spirits of God were referred to as the 7 lamps of fire
- And that the lamps were upon the seven lampstands which were revealed to be the church
- We saw that the 7 Spirits of God were also called the 7 eyes which roamed the earth and reported back to Jesus
- Jesus give a greeting from God, the 7 Spirits of God, and Himself, so we concluded that the 7 Spirits of God were the Holy Spirit
- We looked at three passages where some believe the 7 Spirits are listed
- We then examined how the tabernacle is a representation of God’s throne room given in Revelation
- The menorah was a representation of the 7 churches and lamps upon it represent the Holy Spirit
Food for Thought:
One view of the 7 Spirits of God and its relation to the 7 churches is that there are 7 different ways the Holy Spirit manifests Himself to the churches. Which could also imply that there are 7 types of churches each one emphasizing a different one of the 7 manifestations of the Holy Spirit. For example: some churches focus on prayer, some focus on healing and miracles, some focus on worship, some focus on outreach, some focus on bible teaching, etc. I don’t have a comprehensive list of the 7 manifestations. It doesn’t mean a church can’t have ministries in multiple of the 7 areas. Traditionally churches could be seen as emphasizing one of these areas. Now we have megachurches, and the megachurches try to touch all of the areas. That’s why they have multiple people with the title of pastor.
Angels and the Spirit Realm
This was our 3rd lesson on the hierarchy of the Spirit Realm. We studied:
- Face to face with God - Moses
- Face to face with God - Jacob
- The Angel of the Lord
- 7 Spirits of God
Can anybody see a pattern?
- God
- Jesus
- Holy Spirit

Hammer out its base and shaft, and make its flowerlike cups, buds and blossoms of one piece with them. 32Six branches are to extend from the sides of the lampstand—three on one side and three on the other. 33Three cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms are to be on one branch, three on the next branch, and the same for all six branches extending from the lampstand. 34And on the lampstand there are to be four cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms. 35One bud shall be under the first pair of branches extending from the lampstand, a second bud under the second pair, and a third bud under the third pair—six branches in all. 36The buds and branches shall all be of one piece with the lampstand, hammered out of pure gold.
37“Then make its seven lamps and set them up on it so that they light the space in front of it. 38Its wick trimmers and trays are to be of pure gold. 39A talentf of pure gold is to be used for the lampstand and all these accessories. 40See that you make them according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.
Numbers 8:1-4

We will not kill you.” So they bound him with two new ropes and led him up from the rock. 14As he approached Lehi, the Philistines came toward him shouting. The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him. The ropes on his arms became like charred flax, and the bindings dropped from his hands. 15Finding a fresh jawbone of a donkey, he grabbed it and struck down a thousand men.
